Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of the Republic of Moldova Oleg Ţulea on Thursday (10 September) for talks about the NATO-Moldova partnership.

The Deputy Secretary General said that the Republic of Moldova is an important partner for NATO. He said that NATO is helping the Republic of Moldova build strong institutions and good governance, and stressed that NATO’s support to Moldova is based on Moldova’s request. Mr. Geoană said that NATO has considerable experience in defence and security sector reforms and that Moldova can draw upon this expertise in order to modernise its security institutions and the armed forces. He noted that NATO and the Republic of Moldova are now discussing a new Individual Partnership Action Plan (IPAP) for the coming two years.

Turning to practical cooperation, Mr. Geoană  said that NATO Allies and partners have provided continued support to the Republic of Moldova in response to the COVID 19 pandemic, including tons of medical supplies and protective equipment.  He highlighted that Allies are committed to continue supporting Moldova to deal with this crisis,  responding to Moldova’s request for assistance to NATO’s Euro Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Centre.

The Deputy Secretary General reiterated NATO’s support for the Republic of Moldova’s constitutional neutrality. NATO’s cooperation with the Republic of Moldova is with full respect for the country’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
